GRAACA Fall Tour

On October 14th, the Fall Tour will be based in Maryland. We will start our day at 10:00 am at Frey’s Brewing, 8601 Mapleville Road, Mt. Airy, MD 21771. for their Morning Brew. It is a beautiful venue and scenic area. They offer a large menu of hot beverages and bakery items to get your day started. They are looking forward to hosting us. There will be a trivia question with prize.

Our next stop will be the Strawbridge Shrine in New Windsor, MD. It is the homestead of the founder of Methodism in America. It is a living history museum with the buildings dating from the 1760’s. The staff will give us guided tours.

Our lunch stop will be at Flick’s Pub in Taneytown. The residents at the Lorien Assisted Living Center will be getting a treat. We will parade our cars around the building for them to see, then head inside to eat at the pub. The food is great. Lunch will even come with a couple of door prizes.

Finishing our day will be a choice between a nearby Antique Mall or a short drive to Baugher’s Farm Market.  Both stops take place in the rolling hills of central Maryland.

Lunch choices are on the sign-up sheet in the Sept./Oct. issue of the newsletter. Deadline to register is October 5. Any questions call Annette or Dan Yost 410-635-2530.

Upcoming: GRAACA Fall Foliage Tour

Saturday, October 22nd

The Tour will begin with a visit to a collection of vintage motor scooters from the USA, England, Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Russia, and Japan. An example of what many call the first motor scooter, a 1918 AutoPed, will be on display along with a few vintage motorcycles. This is not a museum but is rather an assemblage of two wheelers that the owner finds amusing to look at. Coffee and donuts will be served.

Two-lane back roads and fall colors will greet us as we tour into York County and cross the 1930 “Veterans Memorial Bridge” that was the replacement of the 1800’s “Burning Bridge” into Columbia, PA to visit the National Watch and Clock Museum. This museum takes us from the beginning of clocks to the development of pocket watches and the “auto clocks” seen in our early cars. We round out the day with a catered pork barbeque picnic lunch in Hellam’s Emig Park.

Coffee and scooter collection 8:30-9:45. Driving Tour leaves at 9:45am.

Annual Dinner 2020– a look back

–Saturday, February 1, 2020

Always held right before the National AACA Convention, this event is our region’s opportunity to install officers for the New Year and show our appreciation for our members. The committee–Ron Green, Karl Krouch and Ed Rogers–did a great job of planning the evening. Held once again at the Lower Allen VFW Post #7530, attendees got to enjoy a buffet dinner and entertainment from The Klineklaus Duo who played “jazz and popular music with a groove” from the 50’s to the 70’s. They were a hit and, wouldn’t you know it, they also have an interest in cars!

Honored guests for the evening included AACA Executive Vice President Jim Elliot, AACA Executive Director Steve Moskowitz, and AACA Museum Executive Director Jeff Bleimeister. Jim and Steve both gave exciting updates about the national club, the new headquarters, the convention in Philly, and the recent purchase of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s auto archives by the AACA Library. Jeff also graciously spoke about the museum and the new “Age of Aquarius” exhibit. He also talked about the importance of the museum’s volunteers, some of whom are Gettysburg Region members including Bob And Dottie Shultz.

The most important part of the evening was the installation of officers in which the gavel was passed from President Annette Yost to new President Bon Barlup. Other new officers for 2020 include Karl Krouch as Vice President, Deb Sherwood as Secretary and Al Maybee as Treasurer. Also, Jim Yemzow and Pat Shaffer were given the Outstanding Service Award for 2019.

Join us for the joint AACA Gettysburg Region’s and Pierce-Arrow Society Chesapeake Region’s fall foliage run on Saturday, October 26th. We will start the morning with coffee and donuts at 9:00 am at our first location, GRAACA member William H. Wessels’ private Formal Cadillac car collection in Dillsburg, Pa. He has Cadillacs from the teens through the 70’s. There is ample trailer parking on the grass if you wish to trailer your vehicle to the starting point. We are encouraging members to bring your “old cars” as this is a shorter tour, measuring approximately 80 miles roundtrip, all on two-lane roads to enjoy the fall colors.

At 10:00 am we will depart from Wessels’ for a 25 mile ride to our second private car collection owned by GRAACA member Jay Crist. He has amassed the largest collection of stand-up to drive package and milk trucks. Jay’s vehicles include many rare antique trucks, of which there are examples from Auburn, Divco, Mack, PackageCar, and Thorne, to name a few.

From there we will continue with a 10-mile ride along the Susquehanna River to our lunch stop to be served at 1:00 pm at the John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville. Here we will have a limited menu from which we can choose from 4 entrees. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

This concludes the tour, leaving time to return to our trailers and home before dark. Our route back to Dillsburg (with directions) will be on other scenic two-lane roads. Price is $25.00 per person. Summer Tour to 50th Swigart Museum Meet

—August 9th-10th, Huntingdon, Pa.

The Gettysburg Region AACA is planning an overnight tour to the 50th Swigart Museum Car Show hosted by the Allegheny Mountain Region AACA at the Swigart museum in Huntingdon, PA.

Mark you calendar for Friday, August 9th and Friday, August 10th, optional Sunday, August 11th if you want to tour the storage buildings.

You are responsible for your own reservations and schedule for traveling, below are several driving routes.  You can enjoy the weekend of festivities beginning Friday evening and ending Sunday with a tour of the storage building or just attend the show on Saturday.

The drive to Huntingdon using back roads is very scenic and relaxing or you can travel Route 22/322 west from Harrisburg or the Pa. turnpike west to Route 522 N. to 22/322 W. My favorite route is Rt. 641 W from Mechanicsburg, Carlisle to Rt. 522 N to 22/322 W.

This route will take you over two mountains with lots of scenery and little traffic with a nice lunch & rest stop at the intersection of 641 and Rt.75 at Spring Run, Pa. Follow 641 to Rt. 522 at Shade Gap and continue north to 22/322. Turn left toward Huntingdon and the Swigart Museum will be on your right about four miles before getting to Huntingdon.

Check your old fashion maps for the best route from your location and enjoy the trip.

The schedule of events and registration form are in the July/August issue of The Gas Buggy or click here: http://www.swigartmuseum.com/2019Meet.pdf. Contact Bob Shultz @ 717-766-0457 or [email protected] with questions or information.
