Sundaes at the Movies 2018

We kicked off 2018 with our annual ice cream social on Sunday, January 21st at the Dover Fire Hall. Our gracious hostess Roxanne Vandermark Hess did a wonderful job organizing the afternoon (and this was her first time hosting this event, too!).

In addition to the raffle and slideshows created by our photographer Ken Meyers showcasing all that we did in 2017, including the Founders Tour, there were a few new surprises. First, members were invited to wear a hat, be it old, new, or even silly. And boy did some people really deliver!

Second, we were treated to a recently unearthed treasure. Gettysburg Region member Fred Gable has been in the club since the very beginning, and as it turns out he had taken a home video back in 1953 of one the region’s very first meetings. The video was sent to the AACA Library where the librarians were able to digitize the film. As a result, both the library and our club now have a DVD copy of the short film which captures moments from the board meeting, a trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield, and even some friendly racing games between the members. Fred made sure to come out to the social on Sunday and, along with Don Barlup, provide insightful commentary. Many thanks are due to Fred, Don, and the AACA Library for helping preserve our club’s history.

Our next event will be our annual dinner featuring the installation of officers. Hope to see you there!

Sundaes at the Movies

This year, our annual ice cream social is on a Sunday, January 21st and we have a new location: Dover Fire Hall, 30 East Canal Road. We’ll begin promptly at 1:00 p.m.

This fun event is an opportunity to get out of the house and shake off the mid-winter blues. Members will enjoy delicious ice cream with all the toppings, and we’ll also be treated to some very old Gettysburg Region films, as well as a slideshow of 2017 events.

Wear a hat, please: something new or old or silly. We will also hold our door-prize drawings, so please bring a nice door prize—something car-related, or just fun.

Cut-out response sheet is an insert in the Nov./Dec. issue of The Gas Buggy Gazette. The deadline to sign up is January 9, and the cost is only $5.00 per person, non-refundable.

Here’s a look back at the tour of Penn College’s Automotive Restoration program on November 4th.

This was a special treat organized by Jim Yemzow and was open to members of the GRAACA, Harrisburg Area Volkswagen Owners’ Club, and Selinsgrove’s Volkswagens in Pennsylvania. Many thanks are due to program instructor Roy Klinger and student Vanessa Mathurin who took the time to show us around and give demonstrations.

Penn College Tour: Deadline Extension

*The following was recently e-mailed to our members from the tour planner Jim Yemzow.

Since the newsletter was so late, and most won’t receive it till later this week, I’m extending the cut-off date for the Penn College tour till Saturday the 28th.

We will meet at the Sheetz in Duncannon (1550 State Road right along Rt. 11/15).  It’s on the right, past a Dollar General.  We’ll leave there at 7:15 and arrive at the Perkin’s Restaurant in Selinsgrove (1394 N. Susquehanna Trail right along Rt. 11/15) for breakfast.  We’ll leave there at 9:30 to arrive at Penn College in Williamsport by 11:00.  Anyone not wishing to eat at the Perkins, can travel there by themselves to meet up with the group by the scheduled departure time.

If you’re interested in going please contact Jim Yemzow (717) 243-5810  yemyak1@embarqmail   or Pat Shaffer (717) 258-4964  ltlcow@comcast.net
Both phones have voice mail so leave a message and we’ll get back to you or better yet send an email.

Tour to Penn Tech

Pennsylvania College of Technology, Automotive Restoration Course Tour

The following was recently e-mailed to GRAACA members from Jim Yemzow.

I’ve arranged to have a tour on Saturday, Nov. 4th at 11:00 am.

Those invited are members of Gettysburg Region of AACA, Harrisburg Area Volkswagen Owners Club (HAVOC), and two other VW clubs. The instructor, as well as students, are coming in on their own time to welcome us and present an idea of what they’re learning to perpetuate the collector car hobby.

For the past six years the Gettysburg Region has monetarily supported this program. HAVOC also contributed to the scholarship program this year. If you’re curious to see how your money is being used, join us. I’ve been to “Penn College” three times already and know you won’t be disappointed.
We’ll be meeting at the Perkins restaurant, 1394 N. Susquehanna Trail in Selinsgrove PA, (right along route 15 north), for breakfast and leave there at 9:30 am to continue on to Williamsport, PA. If there’s enough interest, a closer rendezvous will be arranged so we can travel together to Selinsgrove. Details will be provided to those registering and we would be leaving the Carlisle area by 7:00 am.

There’s no charge for the tour, so I’m hoping for a large turnout.  The drive along route 15, with mountains on one side and the river on the other, should be quite scenic in early November. This may be your last chance for a tour this year!
Please register by Monday, October 23rd, by contacting Jim Yemzow (717) 243-5810  or (717) 258-4964  or  yemyak1@embarqmail.com

Summer Tour 2017: A Huge WOW of Fun!

On Saturday, August 26th the GRAACA held it’s annual summer tour. This year, tour planners Jerry Black and John Sayler had something very unique in store: a trip to the private estate of Irenee DuPont, Jr.

Mr. DuPont, who is 97 years young, has owned a 1936 Olds for 81 years now. He an his wife were delightful hosts and had a few surprises for their guests. Apart from their personal collection of antique cars, they also fired their pipe organ. GRAACA member Pat Shaffer wrote a few comments after her visit:

“That was not what I expected. Whoa!!!! Super fantastic. I just wanted to stay in the little room and listen… it was a huge WOW of fun, and interesting.”

Many thanks are due to Mr. And Mrs. DuPont for opening up their home to us.

Pictures are coming soon!
